Recruiting Job Candidates from Minority Serving Institutions: Promoting This Strategy More

I have often heard my White colleagues say they cannot find qualified college graduates of color to apply for jobs within their organizations in order to increase racial and ethnic diversity. My first question is: from what institutions of higher education are you recruiting? Then I get more specific. Have you tried minority-serving institutions, such as historically Black colleges and universities (HBCUs), Hispanic-serving institutions (HSIs), Asian American and Native American Pacific Islander-serving institutions (AANAPISIs), Alaska Native-serving institutions and Native Hawaiian-serving institutions of higher education (AANHs), Native American-Serving, Nontribal Institutions (NASNTIs), and/or Tribal colleges and universities (TCUs)? Their usual response is that they have not. This always surprises me because MSIs have existed for nearly 200 years. However, they are not considered enough during job recruitment efforts at major companies, nonprofits, and institutions of higher education.

What has been your experience with recruiting graduates of color from MSIs? How can this be promoted more?
